Branches of Government

The U.S. government is divided into three branches to avoid a concentration of federal power:

  • Legislative (Congress) – Makes laws.

  • Executive (President & agencies) – Enforces laws.

  • Judicial (Courts) – Interprets laws.

How a Bill Becomes a Law

A law starts as a bill in Congress, reviewed by a committee. After revisions and debates, it's voted on in both chambers. If approved by both, the President can it into law, veto it, or take no action, while Congress can override a veto with a two-thirds majority.
